Beginners Guide to Drone Flying on a Budget
Using the JJRC H20 Hexacopter and the JJRC H6D FPV Quadcopter as inexpensive, quality Drone Flying Learning Tools.
It is two years now since I started flying a drone a Walkera Ladybird V2 bought as a present and since then I have never stopped flying these remarkable machines. Things have changed considerably and if I were to start my journey today these featured models would be my preferred choice.
My advice for anyone who is looking to get into this exciting and rewarding pastime is to start small with inexpensive small drones like the JJRC H20 Hexacopter , JJRC H6D FPV Quadcopter and use these models to develop your flying skills before moving on to a larger more expensive models, Aerial Photography Drones or FPV Racing Drones.
The JJRC H20 Hexacopter is Fabulous Value at Only $18.99
Drone Flying Learning Tool
One of the best small RC Drones available today is the JJRC H20 Hexacopter which is available from Banggood at $18.99. Cheap it may be but this tiny little Remote Control Hexacopter is packed with great features, is extremely robust and can be flown indoors and outside weather permitting. The JJRC H20’s small size make this model a take anywhere drone and it can be flown in small spaces it is therefore one of the best drone flying learning tools you can buy today. Fantastic fun to fly, the JJRC H20 Hexacopter is truly outstanding vale for money. Buy it for yourself or as a gift for someone you think would enjoy the thrills of Drone Flying. The JJRC H20 Hexacopter will not disappoint. It is suitable for young children under supervision , perfect for beginners to Drone Flying and most suitable for experienced drone flyers who want to have some fast indoor flying fun.
The JJRC H20 Quadcopter comes is a small package it which you will find your drone, a remote control, USB charging cable to charge the removable 150 mAh battery, a spare set of propellers blades, screwdriver and JJRC H20 Hexacopter user manual.
What I do like about the JJRC H20 Hexacopter is that it has propeller blade guards already attached making it perfectly safe for beginners. The removable battery is another great feature as you can purchase spares to your extend flying time and enjoyment. If you have purchased spare batteries ensure you let the motors cool down between flights this will prolong their life.
Watch our JJRC H20 Hexacopter Video
The JJRC H20 Hexacopter Drone also has two front facing white propeller blades and bright red led lights to the rear with blue front facing led lights. These features are really great or orientation so when you are flying you can determine the direction your Hexacopter is pointing towards.
The video above will show you the functionality of the remote control transmitter and how to bind the JJRC H20 Hexacopter to your transmitter and some footage of the H20 in flip, aerobatic mode.
Beginners Beware of the Yaw Rate in Expert Speed Mode
A word of warning at this stage; If you are a complete novice to drone flying then only use the low and intermediate speed settings until you are 100% confident in your flying ability. In expert (the fast speed mode) the Yaw rate, the direction in which you Hexacopter is pointing towards becomes extremely fast and even the slightest movement on the left hand stick right or left will turn this little Hexacopter into a fast spinning aerial top! When you are ready it will perform spins.
Practice in Low Speed Mode
In low speed rate you can practice your drone flying skills, take off and land gently, hovering, forwards and backward flying, use the yaw to change direction of the Hexacopter. Once you are accustomed to this try rotating the H20 Hexacopter a full 360 degrees. Get the Hexacopter to hover then use the left hand stick to rotate it 360 degree in a clockwise direction (move the stick right) and then rotate it in a counter clockwise direction (move the stick left).
Keep practicing these manoeuvres whenever you get the opportunity this will help develop your mind muscles.
Flipping the H20 Hexacopter
The JJRC H20 Hexacopter will perform excellent tight flips, forward, backwards and sideways. You can implement multiple flips and these are great fun but don’t overdo the flips however as it strains the motors
Reverse Drone Flying
Next, now this is the difficult bit which I find hard to come to grips with, reverse flying. When hovering turn the JJRC H20 Hexacopter 180 degrees so the front (indicated by the bright blue led lights and white propeller blades) is pointing toward you. Try to fly it backward and forward by pushing the right stick always remembering by taking the right stick forward the Hexacopter will fly toward you and vice versa, pull the right stick backwards and it will fly away from you. Do this over and over again until you perfect it.
Now comes the difficult bit, as the H20 Hexacopter is moving toward you use the left stick to change the direction the Hexacopter is pointing toward, remembering that as the Hexacopter is pointing toward you left is right and right is left. What I have found useful to do when practicing this is just make a slight movement on the left stick a little input so you can make sure you have it correct.
Don’t worry you will crash it !
At first you will find these manoeuvres frustrating and you will crash and crash again and again. Don’t worry though the JJRC H20 Hexacopter is extremely durable and robust and the propeller guard on each arm enables it to bounce off walls. Practice makes perfect and if you are to advance your flying skills and fly larger more expensive Aerial Photography Drones or First Person View Racing Quadcopters and Hexacopters then mastering reverse flying is an absolutely necessary requirement.
Gyro Testing and Hand Launching can be great Fun
if you want to have a bit of fun with the H20 hex you can try hand launching it by gently engaging the motors as the Hexacopter is sitting in your hand and throwing it up in the air. The 6 axis gyroscope is so good on the H20 that even throwing it at an angle then throttling up it will level itself out. You will need to throttle up quickly then determine which direction the Hexacopter is facing toward and use the Yaw controls to rotate it to your preferred direction.
The headless mode is good for beginners. In this mode forward is always forward and backwards always backwards whichever direction the Hexacopter is pointing towards.
Return to Home
The return to home is not that precise so make sure you are in direct line with the Hexacopter.
The JJRC H6D FPV Quadcopter
There is nothing stopping us from having a quick look at this JJRC H6D FPV Quadcopter before it arrives. I’ve had a couple of the JJRC H6C RC Quadcopters and in this Micro sized class Quadcopter with 2 Mega Pixel Cameras there is no better value for money model than the H6C. it is well made, robust and it is super fun to fly. Retailing at $43.99 on Banggood you could argue that the JJRC H6C 2MP Camera Quadcopter is the logical step up from the JJRC H20 Hexacopter. That maybe so but I will suggest you bypass the JJRC H6C Quadcopter in favor of the new and vastly improved version the JJRC H6D FPV Quadcopter.
FPV Drone Racer or Aerial Photographer?
Who can know at this stage where your Drone Flying Experience will lead to but one thing is for certain, if you are going to develop as an Aerial Photographer or enter the exciting fast flying world of the amazing FPV Race Drones learning to fly FPV is a necessary requirement.
What you are going to get is an upgraded JJRC H6C Quadcopter with WLtoys style Remote Control Transmitter with a detachable screen that receives footage of what the Quadcopter is seeing in real time. This makes it the perfect introduction to aerial photography and the immense fun of FPV flying. With the JJRC H20 Hexacopter to practice with indoors and I expect the JJRC H6D FPV Quadcopter will be a great fun flyer indoors as you use the FPV option to fly from room to room. You will have your propeller protector guards on to limit any damage nice safe fun First Person View flying. You can take off the guards outside and zip it around it will be a sporty flyer for sure. Then you can get it flying FPV style guiding it by looking at the screen and that’s fun.
Drone Flying on a Budget
If you follow my suggested route buying the JJRC H20 Hexacopter using it to learn your flying skills and then move up to the JJRC H6D FPV Quadcopter, for approximately $160 (approximately £100) with plenty of spares included you’ve started to get a really nice Drone Flying Kit together. There are many choices available in the market place today but in my mind JJRC have called the shots as the provider of best value Micro and sub Micro Quadcopters for some time now. The Cheerson CX-10 is excellent in the tiny nano class but it is a lot smaller and unlike the JJRC H20 Hexacopter not really suitable for outdoor flying. The H20 really sits in a class of it’s own for me it’s pretty faultless at $18.99 it’s a no brainer.
