A First Person View (FPV) Beginner Flyer’s Story.

FPV RC Quadcopter
FPV RC Quadcopter from WLtoys V666

I’ve been flying RC Quadcopters for about a year now, Walkera QR Ladybird V2s, Hubsan X4s, the amazing Eachine 108C, the Syma X5C, Nano Drones the Cheerson CX-10, WLtoys V646, Eachine H7, the JJRC F182 and F180 and the Flying 3D X6 Quadcopter. I been so lucky to have had the opportunity to fly all these models. I’m not the greatest flyer but I had some fantastic flying  fun with all these models. I’ve just started my first build, the Super-X but I have not done hardly any FPV flying although I’ve owned the Walkera Ladybird V2 FPV Quadcopter for many months. Today (13-11-2014) I was so pleased to receive a WLtoys V666 FPV courtesy of Banggood for review purposes. The timing could not have been better as I was at a Drone talk the other day and the speaker was describing FPV as ‘Flying like Bird’.  I had already received this week a High Definition Mobius type Drone camera (see below) for the WLtoys V636 Skylark Quadcopter  that will give me an extra Aerial Photography option with the V666 so I’m ready and rearing to go.

Add a High Definition Camera to your V666 FPV and you have a really nice kit. Fly FPV or use your V666 for Aerial Photography Videos and Photographs

Quadcopter Camera
The V666 optional HD Camera

Available as an option for the V666 is a high quality HD camera that films 1080p HD video at 30 FPS or 720p HD video at 60 FPS. The camera attaches to the same Anti-Vibration Mount that comes with the V666 FPV and provides clear 1080p video. Simple to set up and record video or still images from your V666 transmitter a must for anyone wishing to learn Aerial Photography. There has been talk of WLtoys releasing a version of the V262  Quadcopter with this camera as a V656 model, The WLtoys V262 is soon to be upgraded to the V393 with Brushless Motors, I would like to see a different lightweight canopy for this model as I’m sure reducing the weight would make it a really fast Drone flyer.

16-11-2014: Update I got a bit sidetracked today flying the V666 with the Camera. My videos aren’t that great at the moment but when I get used to flying this sized model I’m sure I can capture some decent footage from the V666. It is great fun to fly and very easy to control  and once you are up in the air remarkably stable. I do like being able to decide when to shoot a photograph or record video from the transmitter. If you are looking to move up from Micro sized Quadcopters  experience First Person View flying and take Aerial Photographs then invest in the HD camera add on you will not regret it. It took me with the help of some tweezers about three minutes to remove the FPV camera and replace it with the HD version, very user friendly. When the camera is plugged into the board it automatically recognizes this and the camera is set to take video without the need for image/video rotation. I may be stating the obvious but after flying a lot of Micro and Nano Drone models recently you can really see the V666 in the air and this makes the flying experience far more comfortable, no worries about losing sight of it.

I must say when I received this model I wasn’t sure of what to make of it but after only a few days I’m loving it. From  Like the little QR Ladybird V2 it’s great fun to work on, spare parts and add ons are readily available and both models are fantastic fun to fly, I feel very fortunate so thanks again to Jacky and Sandy from Banggood for providing me with this review copy, they are extremely nice people to deal with. 🙂

This Drone along with the QR Ladybird will teach me FPV flying and with the V666 I can now up my game as regard to Aerial Photography. I love my Micro Quadcopters the Eachine H108C with the 2MP camera is my favorite to date but this is a brand new flying experience for me and something I’m 100% sure to relish.

This  comparison review of the two models is just my First Person View Story. Big or small I’m sure I have in these RC Quadcopters two of the best learning tools you could wish for.

The Walkera QR Ladybird V2 FPV is one of the smallest FPV RC Quadcopters you can buy at 8.5cm x 8.5cm however WLtoys V666 FPV Quadcopter is massive in comparison approximately 52cm X 52cm. Design wise they are very similar it’s the canopy that makes them look different,  Add a canopy to the QR Ladybird and you can see the similarities. The added weight of the canopy and FPV module may be to much for the Ladybird to lift and it may unduly strain the motors. I will give it a test over the next few days. Although the V666 is big I felt confident testing it indoors.

I going to use the Ladybird FPV for mostly indoor flying so in can get a grasp of First Person View flying and venture outdoors with both models when weather permits. I’ve lots of spare parts for the Ladybird V2, I can take it apart, change the frame and motors. No soldering all plug and play flight control board and if need be I can move the FPV module over to one of my spare Ladybirds.  I’ve also plenty of batteries that will fit the QR Ladybird so I should get plenty of air time  with this Micro FPV Drone. I will need to spend some time on the  V666 learning how it all goes together and how it flies.

16-11-2014: V666 Been flying outdoors today making the most of the weather. Used stock battery plus two Turnigy 1000mAh’s .

Banggood are now selling an upgraded battery 7.4V 2800mAh 40C Lithium Battery For V262 V333 V323 and V666 Wltoys model,  they say 15 minutes flying  with this battery fitted, well worth investing it. Consider your motors and don’t push it give it 10 minutes max and your motors will last longer as will your battery investment.

For the QR Ladybird V2 FPV I prefer the 5 x Upgraded 25C 3.7V 380MAH Battery for theHubsan X4 H107 or QR  X4 Ladybird. I find the bigger 500 mAh batteries a bit heavy for the FPV version.

If I’m looking to do acrobatics I would take out the Great Eachine H108C and multiple flip it. I’ve done a few Ladybird frames and canopies trying to flip the bird it I can be done with practice but I’m not risking an FPV Quadcopter to see it turn over. No doubt the V666 can perform 360 degree stunts but I’m really not that interested. The Eachine gives me more than plenty in the acrobatic department enough said. I will use the WLtoys V666 for FPV flying and Aerial Photography and the QR Ladybird for FPV flying only.

13-11-2014: V666, indoors it was amazingly stable at 5 foot, outdoors there was as strong wind, I got it up but then thought better of it! Connecting the FPV Module/Camera seems pretty straightforward with standard connections. First impressions is that it will be user friendly to work on and the canopy offer excellent protection to the flexible propellers and motor housings. Looks like a great beginner FPV Quadcopter to me and I’m going to enjoy it for sure.

15-11-2014: Thought I would take off the V666 canopy this moring. It was a simple enough job, two tiny screws on each arm and some plastic clips to remove. Intial thoughts were that WLtoys should produce an extra canopy so user could fly in a sport mode. What I do like about this FPV Quadcopter is that it is easy to take apart, perfect for a beginner like myself.

  1. Thanks for the write up! My V666 should arrive from Banggood next week. One question for you. The Banggood description says the stock setup comes with an SD card and card reader. I assumed that the FPV camera can also record video…is that not the case? I know the V666 can handle the bigger WLtoys HD camera (available separately) but will I not be able to record video to an SD card with the camera that comes with the V666? Also, how is the FPV monitor powered? Built in rechargable batteries? Or does it plug into the transmitter? Thanks for your help!

    • Hi Adam,
Sure you can record video from the FPV camera to the SD card, the monitor has a built in battery charged with a supplied USB cable. Get piece of kit you will love it.

  2. Really nice to read your reviews on this. I Really do want a larger quad with FPV, but I don’t want to pay to much, so this seems perfect. Does the FPV also work with the FULL-HD camera or is it just for filming and taking pictures? Do you know if the V393 will come in any kind of FPV-version soon? That would be awesome!

    • I have a V393 on the way and I’m sure you will be able to add on an FPV module or the HD Camera supplied by WLtoys. The FPV module on the V666 can be substituted with the HD camera but this cannot be used for FPV. Hope this helps

      • No Problem Simon as always it’s my pleasure I totally enjoy this hobby. As for First Person View (FPV) I’m not sure if the larger type V262 size drones are ideal for beginners or even experience flyers. I started small Hubsan H107D and Ladybird QR V2.I must say I really enjoy attaching the HD camera to the V666 my videos aren’t that good but they will improve using this rig as I’m far more comfortable taking them from a craft this size than using the Micro’s H107C HD or JJRC H6C (a fantastic value camera drone). You can’t however beat the micro drones for a great fun flying experience I find them awesome. I’m putting the HD camera on the Skylark WLtoys V636 today and will hopefully post some images up later, first impressions are that the HD camera could be a little too heavy to maintain a really stable flight. But I’m sure as going to have some fun testing it. I can’t wait for my V393 to arrive in a few weeks that’s going to be great with the HD camera but as you say you get what you pay for. I’ve been waiting for the Hubsan X4 H109S PRO to come out as I’m sure it will be a dream machine but until then I’m absolutely lovin it! Kept in touch and enjoy your flying.

      • I do have a cheapo-noname-edition of the H107something without camera and it is great. But I really want to try a bigger, more powerful and more stable drone, and combining that with trying FPV and filming seems like the right path for me, so I am probably going to buy one soon. The X4 H109S PRO also seemed really awesome though, but I figured I should start fairly cheap.

  3. Hi,
im very interested in getting an fpv quad. I am looking at getting the Hubsan H107d but it only has 0.3mp cam, so I looked around and saw the WLtoys v666 with its 720p hd cam. I have just read your excellent write up and noticed you have used both of these quads, I was wondering if you could tell me what one of these two would be a better buy for a beginner. I have seen lots of reviews on the Hubsan and the LCD screen on the transmitter seems rather clear considering only having 0.3mp and on the v666 although it has the 720p cam, the colours of picture seem a little dark and not as clear, am I right there or is the v666 better quality? Thank you for taking your time to read this. I hope to hear from you soon.

    • I would recommend you get the Hubsan X4 H107D. I say this because you will find it easier to fly both indoors and outdoors and it is extremely easy to transport. The V666 is great but is large in size and therefore suitable for outdoor use. With the Hubsan you can practice your skills at anytime and are not restricted by the weather. Hope this helps.

      • Thank you very much for your reply I’m very grateful. I can understand what you mean, that’s very true, we hardly have any days without wind or rain here in England! Is the LCD display and the camera of fairly decent quality on the Hubsan while fpv flying?

  4. With all the talk of the brushed motors on the 666 not being very good for long term, why haven’t I seen any comments on replacement brushless motors for it, are they available, where, and why not if they aren’t?
Are there other manufacturers motors available that can be adapted to the 666 or others in the WL line that might need them?
Have had the 666 for about a week, just puttering around the Living room 8 or 10 ” off the floor trying to get the feel for it, hope the weather warms up soon to get it outside. My son has heli experience and flew it around the house likes it a lot, Now I have to learn. Funny I taught him to fly Fixed wing as a little boy, now he’s teaching me these things.
OK, Look forward to answers about the motors, so I can start modifying things like I always do!
